Grandma Margaret Behan

Grandmother Margaret joins us for Chapter 8 - "Prayer and the Plant Medicine Field." She will guide participants into the heart of prayer—as structure, as safety, as sacred dialogue with Spirit. Her presence is one of grace, ancestral connection, and gentle power, reminding us that true healing begins when we return to right relationship with our roots, the land, and the great mystery that breathes through all things.

A member of the International Council of 13 Indigenous Grandmothers, Grandmother Margaret is a lifelong ceremonialist, dance leader, artist, poet, and healer. Through her many decades of experience, she has become a powerful voice for ancestral remembrance, cultural revitalization, and the deep medicine of prayer. Her teachings emerge from a life woven with ceremony—from clay sculpting to storytelling, from tipi gatherings to public apology ceremonies rooted in historical healing.

Margaret’s work is deeply grounded in the spiritual discipline of prayer as a living force—an act of reverence, direction, and connection that shapes the plant medicine field and creates safe space for transformation. Her role as founder of the Cheyenne Elders Council and the T’sistsistas’s Sacred School reflects her lifelong dedication to restoring identity and pride among Cheyenne youth and ensuring that traditional teachings, language, and ceremonies are passed on.

Having walked through personal healing from addiction and trauma, Margaret also brings a compassionate understanding of how historical wounds manifest in the present. She has offered retreats for women, adult children of alcoholics, and those healing from co-dependence—bridging her training as a licensed substance abuse counselor with her ceremonial roots.
